A collection of Multiverses
Alex's Multiverse Dream
Hey Meg, I want to tell you about this crazy lucid series of dreams I had!
So I got up with the dog and then I went back to sleep on the couch and I had a series of what I think was like 7 to 10 different dreams that were basically like a trip through the Multiverse. I was experiencing my life in a different Multiverse, and like different permutations of how things could have been and how some things changed.
It was super interesting because my first journey I recognized that I was in a different Multiverse. Like this is crazy. I was at my grandparents house, like always, and then I ran outside and there was snow in the yard and I just wanted to experience it. I jumped in and penguin-slid down the snow and rubbed it on my face.
But then all of a sudden it was disrupted and some kind of entity basically explained to me like, "You know you're, you have this opportunity right now to explore this other Multiverse. But you can't act out of the norm. Like, what I did was was drawing attention to myself, and it wasn't a dream." The entity was like, "No, you are actually assuming the body of yourself in a different Multiverse."
And so, because I did something that would have drawn attention then basically I was brought out of it for a moment to reset. But then I had, like, probably 7 to 10 different iterations of this, and then I knew what was happening and so there were different different outcomes for some journeys.
Like, mostly, you know, [my wife] was still my partner but sometimes we were living with roommates. So one time there were these people I was hanging out with, but I understood them to be my roommates, and [my wife] was working in her office and I thought, Oh, so this is what it would be like if we had friends as roommates. Then I heard [my MIL] come in behind us and I was like, "Oh hey [MIL], cuz I recognized her voice, and I turned around, and it was dark but she looked different. She had some cheek and lip filler and had some some work done on her face and I was like, "Oh this is the [MIL] in this universe.
Then there was one experience where I did actually have control over everything and I kind of understood it. I thought, "Oh, I wish, you know, I want this thing to be here." And all of a sudden I had that thing. And then I was interacting with [my wife] in the kitchen, and then all of a sudden a bunch of people were coming in, and we were kind of having like a private moment. And then, I was, like, "I wish all these people were gone." And they just disappeared! It was like I had control in that specific universe which was cool.
There was one Universe where I came to assume my body in that Multiverse and I was with a woman who wasn't my actual wife but I understood that she was my wife in that universe. She was excited and said, "I finally got him to do this this thing!" And I was like, "What do you mean?" And we walked into a room and there was a baby. But now that I'm recalling the dream it kind of reminded me of an animal actually. It was like a moving stuffed animal or something. It was kind of weird. I don't think it was actually like a baby baby. That's what I was expecting though.
Anyways, I thought you'd be interested in in that concept, cuz it was very lucid! I kept traveling to different versions of myself, and seeing how life would be like there. I don't know if there was like a final outcome or what the last one was but it just kept going on a loop, on repeat, like: new scenario, new scenario, new world, etc.
Oh and one other detail that it feels relevant to share: it wasn't like I was longing for these things, I was an observer and I knew that I was observing. So if I thought about that other wife I just understood in that moment, in that version of myself, I was with this person. It didn't feel emotionally charged, it just felt like I knew that experience. I had this opportunity to be an observer and take in this information and just see what it was like.

Dear Alex,
Holy canoli, that's absolutely fascinating!
The beginning of your dream clearly describes the Wake Back to Bed (WBTB) Method, an actual lucid dreaming technique.
WBTB is exactly what it sounds like: waking up in the middle of the night for a period of time before heading back to sleep. The theory here is that the brief mid-night wake window engages your consciousness enough to bring it back with you into sleep and, subsequently, your dreams.
Our other readers can try this out by setting an alarm to intentionally wake in the middle of the night (I like to shoot for the approximate time after three full sleep cycles). After waking, stay up for at least 20 minutes before heading back to bed. As you fall back asleep you can incorporate other methods like MILD, reality testing, or meditation to further engage your conscious mind and encourage it to help you gain lucidity in your dreams.
This method personally works best for me so I’d really suggest giving it a try!
Also, Alex, I have so many questions...
First, I love that you clarified the observation aspect. Do you think there was a purpose to being the observer? What was your biggest take-away from the dream experience?
Second, do you recall anything about the entity that helped you understand this? Even if you don't recall any visuals, was there anything that stands out about their voice, intonation, feeling of presence, etc?
And, lastly, how did you feel after waking? Were you tired or do you feel like you slept well?
In Issue #8 of Dearest Waking Dreamer we answered Brad's question about why some dreams can feel tiring while others don't so I'm curious about your experience in particular.
For my readers, some people naturally experience intense lucid dreams BUT it can also be a learned skill! Check out my article on lucid dreaming below:
